Sealed and semi-open headphones create sound by using housing resonance to enhance low frequencies. True open-air audio" headphones, on the other hand, do not enhance low frequencies with the housing. Instead, there is no resonance,
allowing the sound reproduced by the drivers to be delivered directly to the ear.
The unique driver design allows the airflow generated by the driver to be controlled with the front and back of the housing open,
resulting in a pure and realistic sound field.

The foundation of sound is air movement, and controlling it is the key to headphone design. There are two major points in the design of “True Open-Air Audio,” which controls airflow and reproduces the original sound only by the movement of the diaphragm.
The first is the difference in sound design between sealed/semi-open and open-air headphones. In open-air headphones, the housing is open, so airflow can be carried directly without stagnation. This produces a pure, realistic,
and natural sound that does not tire the ear, even after long hours of monitoring.
Second is the precision of the driver design. The sound of Audio-Technica's open-back headphones is created by transducer technology that has been cultivated over many years. By applying this technology to drivers developed for “True Open-Air Audio,” the sound reproduced by the drivers is delivered directly to the ear. Furthermore, our headphone technology, which allows us to design the drivers themselves from scratch,
even covers the low frequencies that are controlled by the sealed and semi-open housings.
Because sound is instantaneously created from air vibrations as the diaphragm moves, frequencies are not artificially converted or altered through acoustic ducts or resonance. The result is a pure and realistic sound field.

The R70x series uses a specially designed driver inherited from the previous ATH-R70x model. The sound precision has been improved by reviewing the manufacturing process and other improvements. The new driver enables more realistic sound field expression
and reproduces accurate and natural sound.

The sturdy metal headband structure and new headband combine simplicity and strength to provide comfort even during long work sessions. The headband has evolved from the previous model and has been updated with a slider mechanism for superior fit. The head pad is now adjustable as well.
The ATH-R70xa features high maintenance performance, which is important for engineers and creators who wear and work with headphones on a daily basis. By regularly replacing the headband, earpads, and cords, a pair of headphones can be used for a long time.
